Island Artist Shifts Focus from Sign Art to Fine Art
Susan Sellers Glyman is the featured artist at the e'kaya outsider
gallery and chess garden on Saturday, Oct. 22. A reception to celebrate
her exhibit, Expressions en Plein Air, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m.
Mrs. Sellers Glyman was born in Washington, D.C., and studied at the
Hawthorne School, The George Washington University, the Corcoran School
fo Art and the Institute of Art in Baltimore, Md.
Mrs. Sellers Glyman spent time as an engineering and architectural
draughtsman, where she gained experience with letter form and sign
writing. She eventually started her own business called Sellers Signs,
Inc., a sign-making and graphic design company she has operated on the
Island for the past 28 years. Mrs. Sellers Glyman has created signs for
a multitude of Island businesses, artists, musicians, writers and
families.
After three decades as a sign artist, Mrs. Sellers Glyman has finally
made time for her own self-expression through her plein air oil
paintings. She has roamed the beaches and back roads of the Island,
examined boats and buildings on the Vineyard and all across Maine. Her
exhibit at e'kaya features more than 30 oil-on-canvas paintings.
Mrs. Sellers Glyman has work on display at the Edgartown Scrimshaw
Gallery on Main Street in Edgartown. Smaller pieces can also be found
at the Dragonfly Gallery in Oak Bluffs.
The Expressions en Plein Air show is her debut fine art show. The
exhibit will run from Saturday, Oct. 22 through Thursday, Nov 3.
The e'kaya outsider gallery and chess garden is located at 977 State
Road in Vineyard Haven (behind the Scottish Backehouse.) The rain date
for the reception is Sunday, Oct. 23. For more information call
